Walk The Plank: The Human Division, Episode 2

Wildcat colonies are illegal, unauthorized and secret so when an injured stranger shows up at the wildcat colony New Seattle, the colony leaders are understandably suspicious of who he is and what he represents. His story of how he came to their colony is shocking, surprising, and might have bigger consequences than anyone could have expected.

Episode 2 of John Scalzi’s 13-episode novel takes a different approach from the first by being written as the transcript from a recording that details events following the discovery of Malik Damanis, the only survivor of a raid by pirates upon the merchant ship he served aboard. Malik is found by a doctor living in a wildcat colony, and tells its leader the story of how he came to be there before the colony leader agrees to ease his pain…
This episode was shorter by half than the first, and while at first this left me surprised and a little underwhelmed, the more I considered it, the more questions it raised. How did a merchant-class ship with a full crew come to be ferrying supplies badly needed by an illegal colony? Is there more to the pirate raid than meets the eye (especially given the manner of ‘boarding’ that was apparently used)? And, perhaps most importantly – is anyone going to be looking for the ship now that it’s missing?
Questions, questions, questions.
Looks like I’ll just have to keep reading to find the answers …
Oh, darn.
I still feel slightly underwhelmed by this episode, but I remain optimistic that these questions shall be answered. Bring on Episode 3!
