Well, stop my massively fangirly press! Today has brought along some truly lovely news about one of my favourite fantasy series, and given how far above and beyond excellent it goes, I’m taking a time-out from my day to squee about it here…
MICAH GREY WILL BE BACK!
If you don’t know who that is, Micah Grey is the protagonist in a young adult fantasy series (a planned trilogy) written by Laura Lam. Books 1 and 2, Pantomime and Shadowplay respectively, were published in 2013/2014 by Strange Chemistry, which was the YA imprint of Angry Robot Books. Sadly, SC was shut down later in 2014, and this left the fate of several of its planned releases hanging. News has been trickling in of those in-the-wind books finding new homes, which is always marvellous to hear, but this reader has a soft (warm, fuzzy) spot in her heart for Micah and company, and the uncertain future this series now faced was something pretty worrying indeed.
Well, today I worry no more! Not only has Laura made good on her word that the final book would be published, she’s only gone and gotten a deal with Tor UK – not only to publish the final book, Masquerade, but to reissue the first two books as well! This also means that fans have new covers to look forward to and I might need a paper bag to breathe into, over here…
Quoth the author herself:
“I wasn’t sure initially what the next step for Micah was going to be. I knew I wanted to finish the story with the third volume, MASQUERADE. I set it aside for a bit and I wrote and sold FALSE HEARTS to Tor, which made my dreams come true. Self-publishing seemed the most likely option for the 3rd Micah book, so I researched it and even made a whole draft of a Kickstarter. I self-published the Vestigial Tales last summer to learn about the process. I knew I’d be able to do it, but the idea of publishing on my own was also anxiety-inducing.
Then I discovered self-publishing wasn’t my only option. When I received the rights back for the first two books, my agent pitched my existing publisher. To my absolute delight, Tor UK has bought all three books of the Micah Grey series!
When my agent told me the news, I cried really ugly tears. I sobbed, I hiccoughed. I was a total, happy mess. MASQUERADE (and Micah’s) fate has been up in the air since April 2013. It’s a long time not to be sure of things, and I love this series so much. I’m so glad I’m able to share it with you and that my books starring an intersex protagonist will have the support of a mainstream publisher.
At the moment, this is a UK-only deal, but hopefully other publishers will follow. 🙂
It’s still a bit of a wait for MASQUERADE (a little over a year) but PANTOMIME & SHADOWPLAY will be back up soon.
Thank you to my agent, Juliet Mushens, for selling this series twice now! Thank you to everyone at Tor for supporting my fantasy as well as my sci fi. And, finally, thank you to my readers: I really appreciate your patience and enthusiasm for the series. You kept word of mouth alive. You helped give it this second chance. Thank you, everyone who read my books and told others about them, whether on social media, by leaving reviews, or just physically shoving the book into someone else’s hands. You’re all awesome.”
You can read Laura’s statement in its entirety here – she also links to the official release at the Tor UK site.
My reviews for Pantomime and Shadowplay can be found here and here. As you might guess from those posts, I could not be any happier about this news. I look forward to getting my hands on Masquerade, and also to re-collecting the complete series. Can’t wait!
