Recap: January 2017

Dragons, mad queens, political intrigue, and … lumberjacks?

It’s time to recap what I read/wrote about in January!

SF/F Read Alongs

We returned to the October Daye series with a readalong of Chimes at Midnight, and we plan to continue in February (after a week of downtime) with The Winter Long. Things are about to get epic in Toby’s world, so if you’re up to speed or you’ve read these books before, feel free to join us!

Temeraire

The group livetweets and reviews for this also resumed in January with Tongues of Serpents. Thanks to a bit of a slump in motivation over the last month I have fallen a bit behind with my reviews, but parts 3 and 4 will be covered together very soon in order to try to catch up. You can check out my reviews here, and follow the tweetstorms on Saturday nights via the hashtag #Muskedragons!

Shades of Magic

I decided, somewhat tentatively, to up the livetweeting ante after New Year by turning my attention to V.E. Schwab’s A Darker Shade of Magic. The results were ME FALLING IN LOVE. Ahem. My final review for this book is also yet to be posted, but keep an eye out for that very soon as I will be diving into the second book in this series, A Gathering of Shadows, on Sunday. The hashtag for this happy flailfest is #adsomalong. Join me!

Tremontaine

January saw the second season of my favourite serial come to a fantastically dramatic end, and while my review of the finale is still a work in progress, you can catch up on my reviews of the rest of the season here. It’s going to be a long, long wait until autumn, when it returns…

But that wasn’t all! The enormously fun #TremonTEAM challenges also returned, and gave me a chance to write about my favourite female characters. (Choosing was difficult, which is always an awesome problem to have!)

Mini Rainbows

I did indeed revive this feature after resolving back in December to do so, and my first ‘Various Artists’ short SFF roundup review went pretty well! Click the link for myths, legends and gay lumberjacks! Also, Star Wars fanfic.

What Else?

I surprised myself by managing to get through a pair of novels in January on top of the group reading and despite the brainweasels! One is awaiting review – the utterly lovely Wintersong, by S. Jae-Jones. The other was Luck in the Shadows by Lynn Flewelling, which I read on a friend’s recommendation and rather enjoyed! It had some shaky first-book issues, I think, as well as a bit of a rambly-plot problem, but regardless of this I was intrigued. Should be picking up the next in that series (Nightrunner) sometime soon.

TBR, or Books I Acquired Because Apparently I Can’t Help Myself

  • The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden
  • Finder by Emma Bull
  • Territory by Emma Bull
  • The Game of Kings by Dorothy Dunnett
  • The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams*
  • The Stars Are Legion by Kameron Hurley*
  • The Very Best of Kate Elliott
  • 1984 by George Orwell
  • Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair by Pablo Neruda

*ARCs received from publishers

I’m nearly certain there’s more, but I can’t see what the ‘more’ might be from where I’m sitting and the list is already pretty long so I’ll leave it at that for now. No doubt there will be more by the time March gets here, anyway…

  1. Oh, I actually bought Rosemary and Rue the other day when it was on sale so I’m excited to get started on a paranormal series this year!

I loved all your Shades of Magic updates! =D Looking forward to your livetweets about AGOS.

Wintersong wasn’t on my radar at all but I’ve been seeing so much love for it that I’m considering reading it.

Totally want to read The Bear and the Nightingale and hopefully start The Stars Are Legion this week.
