As we wind down from the storm of readerly emotions that was the Shades of Magic trilogy, and look toward the end of our Temeraire marathon, it’s time for Team Muskedragon to gear up for our next group reads. We’ve chosen another two series to follow these ones with, and today I’m in Grand Reveal Mode!
For those who might not have noticed, Team Muskedragon consists of myself and a small but wildly enthusiastic group of fellow SFF readers who bonded over the Riverside novels by Ellen Kushner (and the Tremontaine serial before that), began reading together and sharing our thoughts on Twitter (and later in various other places too because 140 characters at a time just isn’t enough), and decided we were having so much fun that we refused to stop there. And lo, this weekly segmented review feature of mine was born!
(If you haven’t been following them, these reviews can be found under Muskedragons! in the Reviews menu – check the drop-down!)
So what’s next? Here’s what’s next!
Probationary Constable Peter Grant dreams of being a detective in London’s Metropolitan Police. Too bad his superior plans to assign him to the Case Progression Unit, where the biggest threat he’ll face is a paper cut. But Peter’s prospects change in the aftermath of a puzzling murder, when he gains exclusive information from an eyewitness who happens to be a ghost. Peter’s ability to speak with the lingering dead brings him to the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, who investigates crimes involving magic and other manifestations of the uncanny. Now, as a wave of brutal and bizarre murders engulfs the city, Peter is plunged into a world where gods and goddesses mingle with mortals and a long-dead evil is making a comeback on a rising tide of magic.
Yessss, bring me that magic-filled urban fantasy. MY BODY IS READY.
(I really like urban fantasy.)
So! To kick things off, we’ll be reading the first novel, Rivers of London (or Midnight Riot if you’re American/Canadian), over four weeks. Here’s what the book’s breakdown looks like:
- Part 1: Chapters 1, 2, 3 & 4
- Part 2: Chapters 5, 6 & 7
- Part 3: Chapters 8, 9 & 10
- Part 4: Chapters 11, 12, 13 & 14
Thanks yet again to our most organisational Muskedragon M for the scheduling!
As this is picking up where Shades of Magic left off, we’ll be reading each part on Sunday nights at 9pm BST, starting this Sunday! That’s the 9th, for you calendar referencey types.
I AM SO EXCITED. For the purpose of Twitter fun as we read, let’s have a hashtag – #riversoflondon! Whether you’ve read before or you’re also new to it, like me, let us share our thoughts and feelings! JOIN US.
